Lucky in Love

Most wedding favors end up left on the table. Lottery tickets don't. Here's why this playful favor works so well, how to present them beautifully, and what to pair them with.

The Wedding Favor Problem

Let's be honest about wedding favors: most of them don't go home with guests.

The personalized candy bar? Left at the table. The small succulent? Dead within a week. The custom koozie? Forgotten at the venue. The Jordan almonds? Nobody knows why those exist.

The exception? Lottery tickets.

Why Lottery Tickets Work as Favors

Lottery tickets work for a handful of specific reasons:

They're universally appealing. They don't require the guest to have a particular taste, to fit into a mold, or to use them within a specific window of time before they expire.

They're interactive. Scratch cards in particular create a moment — guests pull them out at dinner, scratch them right there, and you have a little shared experience happening at every table. The person who wins $20 will be talking about your wedding for the next ten years.

They're completely portable. A lottery ticket fits in any pocket or bag. Zero chance it gets left behind.

They work for any wedding aesthetic. The presentation elevates them to any aesthetic level you want.

How to Present Them Beautifully

A lottery ticket in a cellophane sleeve with a paper tag that says "Feel Lucky?" is lovely. A scratch ticket nestled in a small kraft envelope with a wax seal and a handwritten note is stunning. This favor scales up in presentation however much your budget and inclinations allow.

Some ideas:

  • Small glassine envelopes with a personalized tag tied with ribbon or twine
  • A custom "Take a Chance on Us" card with the ticket tucked inside — a nod to your wedding date and a little wordplay
  • A bowl or basket at the end of the night that guests grab from on their way out — the "don't forget your favor!" moment done right
  • Paired with a small note that explains: "We've loved every moment of our lucky day — take a little luck home with you."

Which Tickets to Choose

For a wedding, we recommend scratch-off tickets over draw tickets (where the winner is determined later). Scratch-offs create an immediate, in-the-moment experience. You can buy them at any NC Lottery retailer.

Choose a higher face value if your budget allows — a $5 or $10 scratch ticket feels more generous and often has better odds. The sweet spot is usually $5.

What to Pair Them With

Lottery tickets pair well with other small, light favors:

  • A small packet of wildflower seeds (ecological, seasonal, sweet)
  • A locally sourced honey packet
  • A custom matchbook (for a candlelit venue)
  • A single piece of high-quality chocolate

You don't have to pair them at all — they absolutely stand on their own.

The Practical Side

Buy tickets close to the wedding date for freshness (yes, tickets can expire). For a 150-person wedding, plan on 120–130 tickets — some guests come as couples and are happy to share, and some guests will leave before favors are distributed.

NC Lottery scratch tickets can be purchased in bulk at most grocery stores or gas stations with a lottery machine. Just ask the cashier — they usually keep stacks behind the counter.
